confused parsnips.

by Allison
(Tasmania, Australia)

Hi, I was just wondering if you could tell me a possible explanation for my parsnips being bulbous at the top and then growing numerous smaller roots underneath....it's annoying because i saw the top poking from the soil and dug them up and they are little mutants!

How to grow parsnips unconfused
by: Teddy

Like other root vegetables, parsnips hate fresh or near fresh manure, it makes their roots go all forky, or prongy like forks!
They love rich compost though and will not really grow good sized or shaped roots if grown in sandy, poor soil.
Another reason for mutant parsnips could be stones in the soil which confuses them no end.
