My Grandmother always called it a wondering jew although there are several varieties and colors i know. I put mine outside in semi-shade each summer and it gets beautiful pink blossoms all over it. Good luck.

Name of plant? by: Megan
It looks to me like Tradescantia from the genus of Spiderworts. There are many varieties and it grows almost world wide now. There is a green climbing ground cover variety that's a weed in NZ. It's commonally called Wandering Jew.
If I'm correct, your purple variety is Tradescantia pallida, and it's very attractive and grows well in a container, especially in shady places.
If still in doubt, put in a close up picture of the leaves or describe any flowers it has. ~ Megan
