Growing potatoes

by Linda
(San Diego, CA. )

Ok I kind of started growing potatoes lol. I threw a couple potatoes that were starting to "grow" (the eyes were growing out of the potatoes) from the sack that I had bought from the grocery store onto the ground...well they started growing in the ground.

Now the potatoes are in the ground and leaves have started to sprout, my question is (well its actually 2)
1. will potatoes grow from the one that was in the ground?
2. if they will grow, when will they be ready? (these are your basic russet potatoes you can buy in any grocery store).

Spud growers

Yep your on the right track. The potatoe you planted will send out new roots where the new potatoes will form and a shoot that grows above the ground. Its a great idea to mulch around the stem as it grows this will encourage more spuds as well as protecting any that are close to the surface from the sun and stop them from going green and inedible. Next time i would reccomend perchasing certified disease free potatoes from a nursery you will then know what type your planting but even more importantly you can be assured that you wont be adding any nasty diseases to your soil keeping it productive for many years.
