lettuce eating fly

by michelle vaughan
(tokai, cape town, south africa)

I have started growing a vegetable patch. I have noticed that a fly blue/green in color is eating my lettuces.
I reside in Tokai Cape Town. Does anyone know anything about this.

Without a photo it's hard to know what this fly is.
If it's more a beetle, it could be one of the many flea beetles eating your lettuces.
Or it may be that the fly is beneficial and is eating the real pests – aphids.

Mix up some garlic spray and give that a go.
