New garden plants died

Spinach, collard greens peppers and lettuce dying.
I put brand new plants in a raised bed filled with soil from the big box stores. This soil was supposed to contain fertilizer for 3 months. After a couple of weeks the leaves started turning yellow and eventually the plants died.
I put a layer of compost over them, but this did not help.
The herbs in the garden, Rosemary, thyme, oregano and sage are doing fine, however, parsley and cilantro are struggling.

Any ideas would be appreciated

DYING PLANTS
by: Joyce

Hi, were the plants hardened off before you planted them outside?
I must admit sometimes I don't harden stuff I have bought from nurseries sufficiently before I plant them.
you could try to put a cover over them and see if they recover- hope they do, Joyce.

Dead plants
by: Joyce

Just re read your post- plants are dead- sorry - no amount of covering will restore them! This will teach me to be more careful and to read things properly. Did you check the roots of the dead plants?

Vegetable plants turning yellow then dying
by: ~ Megan

Interesting that the herbs which are fine (rosemary, thyme, oregano and sage) are the very herbs that like full sun and dry, even poor soils, which is the conditions they get from the Mediterranean area where they originate.

So maybe you haven't watered your poor little plants enough. It's very important that newly planted young plants don't dry out.

Otherwise, it might be a good idea to get a soil test done to see if your soil minerals are out of whack. Could be lack of enough nitrogen or potassium.

dying veggies
by: Jake

I have an idea that the soil may be too acid, so I am having a ph test done. A master gardener told me that after putting the compost in the soil, I should turn it in and wait a month. This I did not do. I simply placed the compost on top. We'll see. Thanks for the ideas.

dying veggies
by: Jake

I found what appears to be termites in the ground after I pulled a plant out. Any ideas on how to get rid of them and not poison the vegetables?

thanks

Jake
