Straw Bale Carrots - Growing carrots in straw bales

by The Padj

Try Carrots in your straw bales...they are awesome...they even seem to grow well to a good size when a little over-crowded. They are great!
I have about 28 bales I use and I have also created a raised bed behind all of my bales against a hill side....so I doubled my growing space.
But I need a lot of water... here is where rain barrels come in handy to collect water for my straw bale garden. You need to keep the straw bales full of water enough so that when you gently kick them they do not give and feel heavy...that way you'll get your root systems deeper into the bales, a key for big time growth!
Cucumbers, sweet peas, squashes, carrots, peppers of all kinds, tomatoes. Shout out the ying yang!
Love it.

Megan says: Straw bale gardening IS awesome, you are right. The big question for most people is how to get the dang things in place first (call on the community spirit) and how to keep them watered. You have 28 bales, amazing, you are a superman! Well done on your success, particularly growing carrots in straw bales, it's really good to hear how others do so well.
