Using a mount of topsoil for my garden?

by Cathy
(Queensland)

I have a pile of topsoil to make a vege garden out of. Should I shape the garden, mulch and plant.

I am a bit worried unknown grass and weeds will come through.
Thanks Cathy

Topsoil and weeds

John's comments below are correct. A good layer of 5-10 sheets of paper or some cardboard, hessian sacks, wool carpet... anything that will rot down, will stop weeds from growing as they wont get light.

It helps to water the soil beforehand to start the germination of any weed seeds, then put the paper or similar layer down and by the time this layer has rotted, any weeds or seeds should be well and truly dead.

Shape the mound to the size and flatness that's practical for you. If you want to plant straight away, you'll need to put a layer of compost or rich soil on top, plant your plants or seeds and then finally top with mulch around seedlings.

mulch

Hi,

I suggest that you put down cardboard or newspaper; this should supress the grass and weeds from growing back. This layer will rot down in time (3-4 months) and add carbon also.
