Weeds - how to kill onion weed infestation

by Tony Harris
(Forster NSW Australia)

I have an onion weed infestation in my garden. I have sprayed round up on it and all the plants or leaves die off but every time I dig up the soil, they appear again.
I was told that I could plant some other plant as a companion and that it would kill it. I would be very greatful for a positive answer as I cannot see any choice but to dig out all the soil and replace it at the risk of re-infesting the soil. A never ending circle.

If this works as you say I will be eternally grateful. I will replant the garden this weekend and if they do re-emerge I will be ready for them. Thanks again.

try this

I applaud those who suggest white vinegar sounds like a workable solution. Also if one uses a glysophate product it works better if a bit of vege oil is added to the mix. this helps the solution to stick to the leaf stems. Its also advisable to wait until the onion weed is actually flowering before spraying.Hope this helps, you have my sympathy with your problem but perseverance will win out.
Cheers bILL t. :)

How to kill onion weeds
by: Nils

Is your garden small enough to do the no dig way?

Unless you've got lots of other plants in there, why don't you just smother the wretch bulbs, with thick loads of paper or cardboard, or dark plastic It might take a while but if you seal out light and air and water, they can't grow, ja?

Even if you use non-organic spray, you might stuff up the soil for planting later and there is still just the same chance that onion weed seeds from nearby?? will blow in later anyway. Just my 2 Euros worth, Nils

PS. I didn't shout about my objection to chemicals, but I might later! Another way to kill weeds too is by smothering with cast off carpet.

Onion Grass - White Vinager
by: Robert

If you spray with white vinager does it effect other nearby plants? Sounds like a good solution. Will the sprayed soil be ok for future use?

Vinegar as a weed killer NEW
by: ~ Megan

Vinegar won't hurt surrounding plants unless they get splashed on, because it's only a contact weed-killer.

For how to use vinegar and other solutions for weeds, including onion weeds, you really need to read Organic Weed Control
