Why does my squash produce two different sorts of fruit?

by John - East Texas Woodsman

What causes my Yellow crookneck squash to produce both light colored tender fruits and darker colored hard fruits? The hard quashes are so hard they aren't worth trying to cook and eat so I pick and discard them.

Squash producing different fruits

John, I'd say that you've used seed saved from a previous crop. If so, cross pollination is the likely cause and your squash is not growing true to form. Some other squash variety in your garden or nearby area caused the trouble

The hard fruits are no good, and unfortunately you probably can't tell which are the flowers that will produce the good fruits, so it's not possible to even hand pollinate these. ~ Megan ~
