Pollinating squash flowers
by: Kath, AK

Your squashes are not getting pollinated. You need to encourage bees in your garden by having some flowers, and then the bees will see the squash flowers and will take the pollen from the male squash flowers and fertilize the females squash flowers. The female flowers have a small squash but it will not grow further unless it is fertilized and will die and drop off. Both male and female flowers are on each plant. Some people also transfer male pollen to the female stigma in the flower with a child’s fine paintbrush.
