frogs on log

The Frog
Have you ever wished when fretting
'Bout the chilly air of spring,
When the days are longer getting
And the frogs begin to sing,
Have you ever wished that you could
Just change places with the frog—
Let him shoulder all your trouble
And then leave you on the log,
In the middle of the mill-pond,
Nothing in the world to do?
Have you wished you could change places,
You be frog and frog be you?
He don't fret 'bout rainy weather;
If the sun shines he don't cry;
He just takes it all together;
Happy wet and happy dry.
~ William Henry Dawson

Eco gardening tips

  • Storing spuds
    If you're about to thaw out in the winter areas of the world, it's time to dig up the last of your winter root veggies. You don't want them to start sprouting and going to seed, so get them out of the ground if you can and store them in a cool, dry, dark place.

  • Roots, your time is up
    Interestingly many people know that fruits give off ethylene gas when ripening, some more than others. But it's easy to forget this, when you're storing apples or other fruit, and potatoes and other roots veggies are nearby on another shelf. You don't want sprouting spud tubers, so don't let them cosy up to fruit.

  • Silica gel
    Many gardeners use silica gel packs to help keep their seeds dry when storing. These little packs often come in products from online or shops and are there to soak up any moisture that wafts nearby. It's important to remember to dry these gel packs out first when you re-use them. A good way is to put them in a dish in your oven and heat it to 120° C (250° F) for 1–2 hours.
