Eco gardening tips
- Carefree cucumbers
Easy to grow, gardeners in spring areas should be able to sow cuke seeds directly into the soil once it warms to around 60-70° F (15.5-21° C). When fruits begin to form, make sure plants receive a regular and plentiful supply of water, as this keeps
fruit from becoming bitter or misshapen. Cukes can be picked when small or when normal size, don't leave them too long as they go seedy and yellow quite readily. Picking often encourages more fruit to form.
- Tidy and clean
Leaves, mulch, humus, grass, plants, sticks, howsomewhatever… all serve to prevent water from flowing willy-nilly over land or into the ground too quickly, which can cause flooding. Leaf litter is particularly good at capturing rainfall to enable it to seep slowly into the ground.
- Bravo for avos
Even a small garden can grow avocados, trust me. Although I have a largish garden, I bought 4 grafted, dwarf avo trees, and put them in one corner of my garden, and planted them just over 3 ft (1m) apart, as recommended. This first season they have formed small bushes and I already have 3 avos ripening! Four varieties (Bacon, Hass, Reid, Fuerte) means I'll have
avos all year and the trees grow up to 10 ft (3m), but can be trimmed lower.
