Buy a long season variety, with firm heads, ask at your garden shop or local supplier.
Looks like you're in a chilly place, so you need to get cabbages growing now, as in mid to late summer. Any later and the young plants could get their tender leaves frost burnt, and also they will stop growing and wait for spring.
If your summer warmth is lingering, there will still be moths and butterflies laying eggs so watch out and cover or spray for hungry caterpillars.
