Asparagus seeds didn't come up 2nd year

I have a great bed of asparagus, which is about 8 years old. We gets lots of asparagus.

Last year we started a new bed from seed. The soil is similar, right beside the old bed. The plants looked healthy all summer, they were doing well. But only one tiny stalk has come up out of about 12 plants. And that plant only has one stalk.

The old asparagus is going strong. We've been eating it for weeks.

Any thoughts?

thanks, Debbie

Young asparagus plants died
by: Pamela

I grew my asparagus from seed too. It is very prolific and supposed to produce better plants than planting crowns because there is no transplant shock. I am now into 4th summer and will be picking lots. I did lose a few the first year because of unusual cold weather in winter/spring. Maybe your young plants suffered the same fate?

don't think it was the cold

Hi, Thanks! I don't think it was the cold. We live in coastal BC, it's pretty mild.

Asparagus not growing
by: ~ Megan

If the weather hasn't warmed up it might be delaying the young plants? If they don't send up more spears soon, you will have to dig them up and see if there is some disease or they have been eaten?

Did you pick any spears the first year? Probably not, but if you did, that would weaken new plants and they will not have enough roots formed and energy stored to grow again.
